Welcome to The Center for Writing!

We offer online classes for those interested in learning how to write a mini memoir, as well as consulting services for anyone who needs to write a personal essay when applying to school.

Founder, Rachel Peters, is an English Professor and PhD candidate, specializing in composition and rhetoric and creative nonfiction. She has taught writing and literature classes to college students for over ten years, and is a university writing center tutor.

Rachel offers creative nonfiction writing classes for enrichment purposes. These classes are similar in scope to those she is currently teaching in the college classroom. Enrichment classes are offered virtually and can be one-on-one or in a group setting

Rachel also provides tutoring for those who need help crafting articulate, concise, content rich, and grammatically correct essays. Her area of expertise is the Common Application essay, a requirement when applying to most colleges in the U.S. She developed a method for successful completion of this essay that utilizes lessons she created for her college writing classes. The steps to this process include brainstorming a topic as well as meticulous organization of the essay’s introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs and a conclusion. This is accomplished through guided writing prompts and analysis of model Common App essays. The final stage is the editing phase, which happens while in close communication with the student. Tutoring takes place via one hour Zoom meetings, and weekly written exchanges through a shared Google document.
